Ever since the 19th century, surfaces have been well
understood objects. However, even today they remain at the center of
low dimensional topology. In this talk I will describe how singular
surface fibrations can be used to describe 3- and 4-dimensional
manifolds in terms of curve configurations on surfaces and indicate
what can be done with these descriptions.
