Abstract: We introduce an interacting particle model which evolves randomly according to simple local rules. A height function is naturally associated to the particle system, hence it can serve as a model for interface growth. We are mainly interested in the  fluctuations of the height. Its limiting distribution and statistics under a special scaling are known from random matrix theory. The aim
of the talk is to explain the reason why particle systems and random matrices are related.
